November 4th, 2008. What a night! What speeches! Wow! Barack Obama’s speech made people cry tears of joy all over the country. John McCain’s gracious, measured concession showed tremendous character and wisdom. And how about that amazing crowd in Chicago’s Grant Park? I felt thrilled to be an American on an evening where everything great about our country was on full display.

And in Santa Monica, voters reelected me to their city council with a higher percentage of votes than I achieved in 2004. Thank you! I interpret that as a message to keep working on homelessness, especially veteran’s homelessness. This is a very tough issue. Everyone in the region can help. Together, we can beat this terrible scourge.

In my coffees around town, voters also told me to accelerate work on cleaning the Bay, make sure schools get funded, special-ed parents get respect and council meetings get shorter! As my mother always says to me, “You’d better get on it.” I am going to try!
